Upon Arrival
After a 3-hour flight and a 45-minute drive through traffic in North Puerto Rico, I was greeted warmly at the Hyatt Residence Club Dorado, Hacienda del Mar. I had a minimal wait at the check-in counter and had my keys and resort information in no time. When I entered my suite, we realized we booked a large enough space for 8 people although it was just me and my grandmother sharing a suite that was cleaned and prepped to perfection, My side had the wet bar, and she had the full-size kitchen and dining area. Within 30 minutes of arriving at my room, the front desk called to greet me once more and asked if everything was to my standards.
Duration of Our Stay
We stayed for 5 days and 4 nights – we soon realized that was clearly not enough time. We felt more at home in PR than we did in our hometown. A storm caused an overnight (10 hours) power outage during our first night at the resort. The elevator and lobby still worked, but we ran out of hot water in the morning. We knew beforehand of the state of PR’s infrastructure so it was a minor inconvenience. We come from an area that is prone to hurricanes too. Everyone that worked and vacationed there greeted us warmly and they spoke to us as good friends during our stay.
👍 Tip: Don't skip on the breakfast and alcholic beverages here. The food is authentic and the drinks are crafted to perfection. I recommend the fish and chips and smoked salmon & eggs benedict. The staff is really friendly too!
❌ Avoid: Skip the American dishes that are familar to you. They aren't so tasty. Watch out for wildlife too. The birds won't bother you, but they will watch nearby hoping you'll drop a crumb.
Amenities
They had tons of activities for active adults and children on the island and resort. I worked hard this year so I truly took that time to relax. Although I did not book any excursions in PR, Viator.com had tons of selections to choose from that included hiking through the jungle, kayaking, historical tours, and even day-long catamaran journeys to PR’s various islands. I was more laid back so I often found ordering drinks at the beachside restaurant Mahi Mahi or swimming laps in their insanely large pool. I honestly have to say that it only got crowded once.
Summary
I like this resort so much that I would stay again due to the fantastic service we received from day one. The people of Puerto Rico are diverse and quite charming. I’ve learned so much about their culture and history that it inspires me to contribute to their economic well-being and stability. The island's inhabitants are very conscious of their effects on the environment – it’s ingrained in the culture itself. The beautiful blue waters of PR remind me that the world has so much to offer and to live a little.
