Best Gay Friendly Caribbean Islands for LBGTQ+

The Caribbean is one of the most ideal regions to visit for a fun-filled, sand and sun vacation. Most of us know that every country has its stance on laws specific to the LBGTQ+ communities and some Caribbean countries carry laws that may pose a challenge and/or danger to LBGTQ+ persons. These laws are old and influenced by history and religion. Today we will discuss such LBGTQ+ friendly Caribbean Islands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer travelers.

In Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean Islands, sexual activity between consenting adults of the same gender is prohibited and the laws for each country carry a prison sentence of 10-15 years however, there has not been any recent evidence of this law being enforced. Also, the laws lean heaviest toward sex between men.

These laws were established during British colonial times and recently many countries have been revoking the old laws. Most recently, USAID announced that Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Trinidad & Tobago have declared that the criminalization of LGBTQ+ people is unconstitutional. It is a small step in the journey to respecting the human rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.

You should be aware that the Caribbean is not necessarily more or less homophobic than any other region in the world if you are seeking gay-friendly travel options there. The attitudes people have toward same-gender relationships are based on constrictive, colonial ideas that are difficult to overcome. Because of this, some Caribbean islands are slower to advance in terms of LGBTQ+ rights than others, but some have already done so.

No one should ever feel the need to be wary of traveling to certain countries because of their sexual orientation but here are some island destinations from the Caribbean that will make LGBTQ travelers feel safe and welcome.
